Prior Authorization and You

Timecode: 00:00 - 00:03

Action: [Red Lilly Opening]

CAPTION: Lilly

Descriptive Clue: Lilly logo appears

Timecode: 00:03 - 00:12

Action: [Male and female characters sit on bench at a park and have a conversation. Animation zooms closer to both characters.]

CHARACTER 1 (MALE VOICEOVER): REMEMBER THAT MEDICATION I MENTIONED I WANTED TO TRY? MY DOCTOR WROTE ME A PRESCRIPTION FOR IT.

CHARACTER 2 (FEMALE VOICEOVER): THAT’S GREAT!

Timecode: 00:12 - 00:17

Action: [Animation zooms out and shows male and female characters with a health insurance document in between them.]

CHARACTER 1 (MALE VOICEOVER): IT’S JUST, I’M RUNNING INTO AN INSURANCE ISSUE.

Descriptive Clue: Male character has a confused facial expression.

Timecode: 00:17 – 00:27

Action: [Animation zooms closer to document with a finger swiping across the document to reveal “Requires Prior Authorization” on document.]

CHARACTER 2 (FEMALE VOICEOVER): MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE THE PRESCRIPTION REQUIRES PRIOR AUTHORIZATION. DID YOUR DOCTOR SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THAT? SOMETIMES THEY’RE NOT AWARE IT’S NEEDED.

CAPTION: Requires Prior Authorization

Timecode: 00:27 – 00:29

Action: [Animation shows an icon with “PA” written inside of it. A medical chart is shown with the male character’s headshot, a patient overview section, current medication section, lab results section, and messages section.]

CHARACTER 1 (MALE VOICEOVER): NO! WHAT IS PRIOR AUTHORIZATION?

Timecode: 00:29 – 00:36

Action: [Another female character is shown looking at a computer screen. Animation transitions to another frame with a male physician reviewing a clipboard.

CHARACTER 2 (FEMALE VOICEOVER): IT LETS YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY GATHER MORE INFORMATION FROM YOUR DOCTOR SO THAT THEY KNOW IT’S THE RIGHT MEDICINE FOR YOU.

Timecode: 00:37 – 00:43

Action: [Clipboard with male patient’s headshot is shown with a checklist. A medical folder and prescription are shown to the left of the clipboard. An EKG diagram is shown to the right of the clipboard.]

CHARACTER 1 (MALE VOICEOVER): WHAT KIND OF INFORMATION?

CHARACTER 2 (FEMALE VOICEOVER): IT COULD BE DETAILS ABOUT YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY, WHAT TREATMENTS YOU’VE TRIED BEFORE… THINGS LIKE THAT.

Timecode: 00:43 – 1:03

Action: [Animation shows male and female character again before transitioning to scene of a park. A car is shown driving through trees and by buildings. The car passes by a building window that has “Appeals Process” written on it.]

CHARACTER 1 (MALE VOICEOVER): IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO DO?

CHARACTER 2 (FEMALE VOICEOVER): I WOULD CALL YOUR DOCTOR. EVEN THOUGH IT’S A LITTLE MORE TIME UP FRONT, IN THE LONG RUN IT’S MUCH EASIER TO TAKE CARE OF IT BEFORE YOU FILL THE PRESCRIPTION FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT’S POSSIBLE THE PRESCRIPTION COULD GET DENIED AT FIRST, BUT DON’T LET THAT WORRY YOU. THERE’S AN APPEALS PROCESS.

CAPTION: Appeals Process

Descriptive Clue: Leaves are falling from tree and a car passes by.

Timecode: 1:03 – 1:19

Action: [Animation shows a bag with a prescription label on a table. The prescription symbol transitions into a document titled “About this medication.”]

CHARACTER 1 (MALE VOICEOVER): AND FROM THERE, I JUST GET MY PRESCRIPTION AS NORMAL?

CHARACTER 2 (FEMALE VOICEOVER): YES YOU CAN. BUT I ALSO WANT TO TELL YOU THIS. WHEN I HAD A PRESCRIPTION THAT NEEDED PRIOR AUTHORIZATION, MY DOCTOR SUGGESTED I CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE OF THE COMPANY THAT MAKES THE MEDICATION. THEY HAD SOME HELPFUL RESOURCES. YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE A LOOK.

Timecode: 1:19 – 1:25

Action: [Male character is outside of the car, while female character is inside the car.]

CHARACTER 1 (MALE VOICEOVER): THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW. I’LL CALL MY DOCTOR ON MONDAY.

Timecode: 1:25 – 1:35

Action: [Car drives away and animation transitions to a white screen with leaves.]

NARRATOR 3 (FEMALE VOICEOVER): FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PRIOR AUTHORIZATION PROCESS, TEXT PA TO 85099.

Some medicines, procedures, and treatments require prior authorization. A prior authorization is an approval your healthcare provider needs to get from your health insurance company before you can get certain medicines or begin particular treatments. Without prior authorization, your insurance plan may not pay for your medication or treatments and you would be responsible for the full cost.

Your healthcare provider’s office will usually submit prior authorization information to your insurance company for you. Currently, prior authorization requests are processed within 14 days, and within 72 hours if the need is urgent.

If your prior authorization is denied, don’t despair. You may just need to work more closely with your healthcare provider to appeal the decision. You can also check the medication's website for more resources.

Once approved, keep a record of your prior authorizations in case you need to make the request again in the future.
